Top ALBUM of 2009

OK, it's time to ask the question, what cd/album do you think had the biggest impact on you or which is your absolute favorite of 2009?

For me, when I think back on last year one cd stands out--Bon Iver "For Emma, Forever Ago" [There ya go, Scott, you should buy it for your daughter!]

It was sort of our soundtrack especially of the first part of last year, the cold winter months. He recorded it alone, in a cabin in the snow in the middle of nowhere, Wisconsin after breaking up with a long time girlfriend. It was the music we were listening to a lot at the time when our pup, Haggis, got sick and had to be put down. Even now I have trouble listening to it.

It's poetic and lonely and sad and wintry. Yeah, I know I'm a glutten for punishment, it's just so amazing.

OK, NEXT? I really want to hear your choices. I know my tastes probably aren't very TTN, but still. Let's hear your choices!

Thanks for this HV (I know we have some long standing music-related business to resolve. My bad, I will defo sort at my end)...

Without wanting to sound excessively miserable, I am afraid 2009 hit an all time low for me music-wise. This is a shame, because it is a particular passion of mine.

With the exception of the MOR Americana-esque albums from Conor Oberst, Colin Hay and Monsters of Folk, the year was a wash out. I eventually resorted to buying myself the guitar below, as I decided that I would prefer to listen to my own cat like scratching around the frets than waste more cash on the same old, same old.

Bah humbug, eh?

To make matters worse, reading the recent story about ‘Down Under’ (see link) has just made things worse.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8499973.stm

Do me a favour and click on the BBC link at let me know what you think. Listen to the two pieces of disputed music too.

In my opinion, this is shocking. Not just because I am a fan of Colin Hay, but because if this is in fact a valid ruling for this track, doesn’t it open the flood gates for effectively anything ever written?

Surely then the authors of every rock and roll tune from the 50s onwards should be waiting for a call from relatives of a small group of frontier musicians producing brilliance out of the predecessors of the guitar above.

Views welcome...

Can't see much of a case against Men at Work having listened, but then I am no lawyer or musician ..... Seems like a long shot to get hold of some cash to me.

As for 2009, I listened to so little I can't really say. Just tucking into Big Pink - A brief history of love. I have a feeling I will like it ..... sorry... that's a useless contribution.
J&S used to be padding around my show.

Thanks A

Nice to know know that I am not going completely mad.

Not sure legal knowledge or knowing how to play an instrument helps the ear pick up similarities or differences in a tune though. It either sounds the same or it doesnt? :D

May be I am being over simplistic....

...but I suspect the outcome of the court case would have been different if the band under scrutiny was the Beatles, Rolling Stones or Oasis...
